The South African prodigy born and raised in the hard knocks of Durban South Africa has begun to leave a legacy as a competitive beast in his young career. The powerful natural-footer proved to be one of the most consistent surfers on the 2010 ASP Dream Tour season, clawing his way to an impressive runner-up finish to Kelly Slater while taking his maiden elite event win by snagging the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, putting an exclamation point on his third season on the Top 34. Smith’s freakish talent saw him not only clinch the coveted ASP World Junior Championships, but also saw him qualify for the ASP World Tour in only one year, a feat almost unheard of amongst his peers.
With a hand in pushing the limits of progressive surfing with the likes of Dane Reynolds and an approach to competition that is eerily similar to that of 10-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater, it’s no wonder why surfing critics are calling for this South African talent to be the next major force to dominate the sport of surfing. With three years of elite experience under his belt, Smith will be a force to be reckoned with in 2011.
JORDY SMITH
Jordy Smith has been surfing most of his life and is a pro surfer from South Africa. Known as the "hard-worker" with an aggressive style, pro surfer Jordy Smith competes at the WCT championship surfing level. Jordy Smith's nickname is Superfreak. Jordy Smith also goes by the nickname Smitty. This is the Surfing.com Jordy Smith biography.
Height: 188cm, 6ft 2in Weight: 81.6kg, 180lb
Birthday: February 11, 1988
Birthplace: Durban, South Africa
Current Home: Durban, South Africa
Life Facts: Growing up in South Africa, Jordy Smith was introduced to surfing by his father, who was a former surfer. Jordy immediately fell in love with surfing and would practice for hours a day. When he wasn't on his surfboard, he was studying tapes of his boyhood idol surfer Kelly Slater.
Successes: Jordy Smith has been a surfer most of his life and is considered a very hard worker. Jordy Smith's hard work paid off as he became one of the world's best up-and-coming surfers. He won the 2003 Quicksilver ISA World Junior Championships Under-16 in his home country of Durban, South Africa. This WQS win put him in the world spotlight. As an 18-year-old, he won the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing's Rookie of the Year award. Last year, Jordy won the 2007 ASP World Qualifying Surfing Series by a record margin.
Surfing Style: Jordy Smith has a regular stance. Jordy Smith has a very smooth, powerful, and aggressive surfing style when he rides the waves. Jordy surfs with an unbelievable amount of control, but also has some unique moves. His trademark surfing trick is his aerial maneuver he does in the middle of his waves. He invented a new surfing move called the Swiss Roll - which is where he grabs his surfboard while in the air with both hands and does a 360 degree spin.
Other Sports: When Jordy Smith is not surfing, he enjoys playing Soccer and Tennis.
Likes & Dislikes: Jordy Smith's favorite music is Jack Johnson and Sublime.
Favorite movies are Napoleon Dynamite, Finding Nemo and Anchor Man.

Travis Logie
In June of 2002, Travis Logie lead the South African team to the 2002 Quiksilver ISA World Surfing Games. The 9-day “Olympics of Surfing” was held at North Beach in Durban, which was home grounds to Logie and some of his teammates. Logie won the Gold medal in the Open Division and brought some glory directly home to his homeland, the land of J-Bay, Shaun Tomson, a lot of swell and a lot of sharks.
Light and quick like the South African animal symbol, the Springbok, Logie grew up surfing between the jetties of Durban’s North Beach, learning how to duck into tubes and weave fast to dodge the sinkers and spark plugs coming from fishermen on the jetties. The Kwa-Zulu Natal province is the most competitive in South Africa – a surf mad country – and Logie showed what he was about by winning the championship four years in a row.
Logie was 23 in 2002 when he won the World Amateur Title on his home beach and then to prove that wasn’t a fluke, he jumped on the WQS Tour in 2004, won the 6 Star Rip Curl Pro and made the WCT in his second year. Sponsored by Quiksilver, Logie almost had some ‘splainin to do when he beat Kelly Slater fair and square at the 2005 Nova Schin Festival Brazil. The World Title was up for grabs and Slater was ready to grab it but Logie took him out in Round Four and gave Irons a chance: “We looked at each other before the heat, and he said, ‘Good luck’ to me, and then after the heat he said, ‘Well done’ to me. It was actually so civilized.” Logie said on www.surfermag.com. “ After I won I was obviously really stoked about the result. Like, so, so stoked. Then I got bummed for Kelly, then I was stoked again. Haha, there was just so much going on.”
Logie was torn again when Nathan Hedge beat Andy Irons to give Slater the World Title: "Well, you know, I was relieved for Kelly. Thing is I’m a good friend of Andy’s so it was really hard to separate the two in my mind. I felt bad for Andy but stoked for Kelly. They had both been pushing each other so hard the whole year so I was kinda keen on it going to Hawaii, but whatever. It was over.”
When asked if he would have thrown the heat to help Slater, Logie said no way, bru: “ I would never throw a heat. I have worked so hard to get where I am today, it would be the most pointless thing I could do. When I paddled out for that heat I was already completely assured that I had requalified. I was going out there, fully aware of everything in the big picture, and I wanted to win that heat. Simple as that.”
The South African rand does not do well against currencies around the world and a South African passport still raises eyebrows in certain parts of the world. So life on Tour isn’t easy for Springbok surfers like Logie, but he’s in it to win it: “I’ve worked bloody hard at my surfing and it has gone better than expected,” Logie said to www.surfermag.com. “and I’m really stoked to be where I am. Changes are inherent bru. I’m way more confident already. Going to carry on charging, and just hit each event full of confidence. I’m ready.” Stats
